Introduction to Hearts of Iron 3 Options

When you run HOI3 for the first time, you will face with “Quick Start” screen. “Quick Start” screen doesn't have many options, so we will not use this screen. Try clicking the “Custom Start” button in the lower-right corner of the screen for more options.

"Custom Start" screen gives us more choices. You can click “Options” button in order to change game's settings.

You must click the “Game” tab in the “Settings” window in order to change “Autosave Interval” option. Here you can choose four options:every month, every six months, every year or never. I personally prefer “never” option.

When you click “Video” tab in “Settings” window you will face multiple settings. I will try to explain these.

1- Resolution :
Resolution allows you to select the appropriate resolution value for your monitor.

2- Refresh Rate :
If you have CRT monitor, you must select the appropriate value accordingly to your monitor's refresh rate. This will make your eyes feel more comfortable. As far as I know, Refresh Rate doesn't have an effect on LCD monitors. So if you have an LCD monitor, you dont need to change this value.

3- Multisample Level :
Multisample value sets the level of multisampling and anti-aliasing. The higher this value is the higher you will enjoy the game's graphics. But be advised, this may reduce your computer's performance.

4- Gamma :
Gamma slider allows you to change the contrast and brightness of the game. If you think there is a problem with either the contrast or the brightness of the game, you should try moving this slider a bit.

5- Counter Dist. :
When you zoom in on the main map, “Counter Dist.” is the option that determines the level of transition between “Sprites view“ and “Counter view”. So if you want to change the level of transition between “Sprites view“ and “Counter view”, this is the slider you need to mess with.

6- Counter Hierarchy Scale :
“Counter Hierarchy Scale slider“ allows you to adjust “HQ Counter icons size”.

If you move the "Counter Hierarchy Scale slider" to the left "HQ Counter icons size" will be equal to the icon size of other units.

If you move the "Counter Hierarchy Scale slider" to the right. "HQ Counter icons size" will be much larger than the icon size of other units. If you pay attention to this picture, you can see that HQ Units have different sizes.

Theatre(XXXXXX) > Army Group(XXXXX) > Army(XXXX) > Corps(XXX)

7- Use Counters :
First of all I want to show you the difference between "Sprites icon" and "Counters icon"

“Counters icon” can be seen inside yellow rectangles.

“Sprites icon” can be seen inside yellow rectangles.

“Use Counters” determines the icon view on the main map.

-Checked : “Counters icon” will appear at all levels of zoom on the main map.

-Unchecked : “Counter Dist.” determines the level of transition between “Sprites view“ and “Counter view” on the main map.

8- Show Hierarchy On Map :

-Checked : Arrows will show the relationship between HQs and Divisions.

-Unchecked : Arrows will not appear on the main map.

9- Counters Show Units Names :

-Checked : It allows you to see the name of division in the right side of “Counters icon”.

-Unchecked : It allows you to see the name of the commander who is in charge of that division in the right side of “Counters icon”.

Not : For more information on Counter Icon. Look at the following link.

10- Trees :

-Checked : If left checked, this option creates trees on forested areas (Multisample Level is 8).

-Unchecked : Trees will not appear in forested areas. I personally prefer “Unmarked” option.

11- Advanced Water :

-Checked : Waves will appear all over the sea on the main map.

-Unchecked : Waves will only appear in the coastal areas on the main map. Plain dark blue appears in other parts of the sea. I personally prefer “Unmarked” option.

Audio” ve “Controls” tabs in the “Settings” window is very simple, they are quite easy to understand. So I will not explain them.

You can easily reach the “Settings” section even when you are in the game. All you need to do is clicking the button that is shown in this picture. After that, click the “Game Options” button.
